The Logic of
Exclusion
OpenGrain operates at the margins. We define quality through internal system elegance rather than market dominance or chart velocity.
Zero Market Influence
Our most rigid boundary is commercial success. If a game enters the Steam Top 100 Global Sellers, it is automatically removed from our potential coverage pool. We exist to redirect attention to what has been overlooked.
Mechanical Depth Over Polish
We prioritize games with unique mechanical loops that the AAA market deems too risky. Visual polish is a secondary metric; the elegance of the internal game logic is our primary evaluative focus. A masterpiece is defined by its systems, not its shaders.
Execution of Finished Visions
OpenGrain maintains a strict "No Early Access" rule. We review the final intent—the finished creative vision—not a promise of future bug fixes. We wait until a project is technically stable and mechanically complete before assigning an editorial unit to its assessment.
Editorial Silence on Hype
Marketing spend is a disqualifier. If a game is supported by a multi-million-euro advertising campaign or massive corporate PR, it does not fit the criteria of a "hidden gem." Our platform is reserved for talent that lacks the budget to buy visibility.
"A game's value is inverse to the volume of its noise; we seek titles that whisper to the few, rather than scream at the masses."
Audit vs. Review
Numerical Scoring
- ✕ "Fun" factor as a primary metric
- ✕ Graphics-to-budget comparison
- ✕ 100-point scale abstraction
- ✕ Pre-release hype cycle alignment
- ✕ Emphasis on accessibility
Mechanical Audit
- ✓ Systems logic & player agency
- ✓ Aesthetic intent vs. execution
- ✓ Minimum 15-hour stress test
- ✓ Post-peak market assessment
- ✓ Niche loop mastery demand
Applied
Skepticism
We intentionally ignore user review scores during discovery. Our process is designed to filter out the noise of "review bombing" or algorithmic fanboyism. We trust the code, the mechanics, and the deliberate hours our team spends in-game.
Stability is non-negotiable. Art never excuses failure.
15/HR Baseline
Every verdict is preceded by a mandatory 15-hour session. Strategy and simulation titles demand this depth to reveal their true mechanical integrity.
No Review Keys
We do not accept "Keys for Coverage" arrangements. Games are procured through normal commercial channels to maintain full editorial independence.
Niche Integrity
We evaluate how well a game serves its core niche. Broad appeal is often a result of compromise; we value specific, uncompromising systems.
Frequently Challenged
We anticipate the skepticism surrounding our rigid standards. Here is how we handle the grey areas of indie game curation.
